Useful reading

Available online is a plethora of interesting and detailed writings on research patenting, the Bayh-Dole Act and intellectual property in general.  There are also book reviews published on yalepatents.org with more detailed commentary.  A few selections:

  • Fortune Magazine published a review of the effects of the Bayh-Dole effect, for its 25th anniversary in 2005.
  • The National Research Council has a recent report, entitled A Patent System for the 21st Century, which is free to download online.  One of its editors is Richard C. Levin, the president of Yale.
  • An extremely readable introduction to intellectual property and the public domain is available in James Boyle’s 2008 book, The Public Domain, available online from his website (which also has an enlightening blog).
  • Michele Boldrin and David K. Levine’s book, Against Intellectual Monopoly, uses economic history and theory to argue against the legitimacy of government-endowed intellectual property protections.
